Birds, walks and cake
Lovely day at Gedser Fuglestation, we opened the nets early in the morning but we had to close some of them during the day due to weather conditions – a bit too windy in some parts of the station. Although we did not catch many birds, we had wonderful discussions about the moult in various species of Passeriformes. Having birders and also students from different European countries gives us the opportunity to refresh some concepts of bird ringing and to learn different techniques. Among various species we had goldcrest (Regulus regulus), chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita), robins (Erithacus rubecula) and a sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus)! We did not take many pictures today but here you have some we took yesterday.
Yesterday night we had a walk along the beach and we tried to catch waders, we could hear some of them but the moon was so big and reflected too much light, we could not see the birds but I am sure that they saw us! Also, when we were on our way back to the station we saw a short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) in the middle of the crops really close to the road, but it flew away when we where trying to get it. We had no luck catching birds but it was an amazing experience and the first time for some of us.
Alejandro recaptured a Jernspurv (Prunella modularis) from Norway which was ringed 3 years ago and it was an adult, so the bird is at least 4 years old. And it has been travelling a lot!
The station is not only about birds, we made a language exchange (Danish, Norwegian and Spanish) with a tea and a wonderful cake that Esben made. That is all for today.
And of course, the numbers from today:
With kind regards,
Celia.
