Finch-tastic

fredag 4. oktober 2019
af Gail Stride

Today we woke up anticipating another busy day but after a slightly underwhelming first round we realised we could relax somewhat! We still caught a steady stream of birds throughout the morning - lots of robins, chiffchaffs, and goldcrests, as per usual. We also got a good number of wrens, which are always fun! We didn't catch anything particularly rare, but it was nice to get three goldfinches, two greenfinches, two chaffinches, a linnet and a siskin. Strong effort from the finch family.

Around midday Gert whisked us young(ish) ones away, leaving Vagn manning the nets, for a spot of bird watching around the lakes in Naturpark Maribosøerne. It’s a beautiful spot, and even though it was a bit of a quiet day on the bird front we still managed to see a white-tailed sea eagle perched in a tree, lots of grey herons, great crested grebes, pochards, tufted ducks, a couple of goldeneye ducks, a greater black-backed gull, and many greylag geese, mallards, etc... It was fun to get out and see some more of this part of Denmark – although I can’t believe how completely flat it is!

We got back to the house pretty cold and starving hungry, and promptly got to work making a feast and a stoking up a good fire! It should be noted that the wood burning stove throws out an impressive amount of heat once it gets going.

Ramón and I are currently hunting owls, so fingers crossed we will get one some night soon…Watch this space!

That’s all for now!
