Gedser Fuglestation Blog
Ok, I finally found the courage to write. It is not easy to past judgement onto one's self or to be honest in a self evaluation but if you really wish a desseration I would be happy to bend your ear at the station from the Grimm's fairy tails to capturing Bourke's Parrots in Oz . But for the sake of self perservation I will introduce myself as a happy-go-lucky type of person who has, since 1971 enjoyed the art of banding birds (ringing). More recently this art form has turned into a science because I discovered the challenge of writing reports and working numbers that suggest or support field observations.
Since the early 70s I was banding birds professionally in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Australia. Duirng the past years I provided instructal courses in bird banding included the capturing, handling and the identifcation of hummingbirds, gulls, shorebirds, waterfowl, passerines, and raptors. I have established the first bird banding observatory in Alberta and was instrumental in the formation of two such observatories. All three are still operating in my home province.
I have a Master Bander certification for North America (Canada) and a A-class permit to operate as a bander in Australia, specially in the states of NSW and Queensland.
I am especially grateful to Hans for providing me the oppotunity to work at Gedser this September. The station is a great place but moreso, the people I have so far met at the staion and work with, have been most excepting and gracious to a non Danish speaking Canadian.
Rainer Ebel.
