Flere forårstegn!

mandag 14. april 2025

Ringmærkning: Up went the sails (the mist nets), down came the hail (the rain). There was a busy flow of birds flying into the nets this morning, but an intermission of rain meant that we did some klap net (closed the nets) briefly to let it pass and avoid the risk of birds getting wet whilst caught in the nets. Three munk (blackcaps) were ringed today (two male and one female), and the morning saw many new birds being ringed. In total, 52 new birds were ringed today, including three rødtoppet fuglekonge (firecrests). In the second half of the morning we had a fair number of recaptures from the day. Before long, it was time to close the nets for today, and slowly the clouds began to open up for a sunny afternoon…

Nyt fra fuglestationen: In the afternoon, Marith, Oliver and I went out to look for the fuglekongesanger (Pallas’s leaf warbler). We parked up the car between the sommerhuse and began to strain our ears to hear its song (something between that of a løvsanger and a gærdesmutte). Justin Bieber playing from the radio of the neighbouring building site provided the extra challenge, but before long Oliver’s sharp ear picked up the wanted warbler. It was far away, we stalked to the next road over, Oliver tracking its whereabouts like a crime scene investigator, Marith providing the doc pick, and I, well I never caught sight of the bird. But in the end, we were there, showed up and heard plenty of other birds on a sunny spring afternoon. Give it a go and perhaps you will get lucky (and entertain the holiday homers whilst you’re at it). Next stop: the infamous Bøtø Fluglturn. Of course the geese, ducks and coots presented pleasant background chatter, but in the foreground we were able to watch the loop-de-looping lapwing, the common redshanks picking away at invertebrates, the graceful avocets and even three yellow fluffy greylag geese chicks! Further back there was a marsh harrier swooping around. As we trundled back towards the car, the hooded crows were chattering noisily to our left. Suddenly, Marith cried out and between the crows a huge havørn (white-tailed eagles) was the culprit for the commotion. Only a few metres from us it stood, before lifting up and swooping around. What a sight for the eyes!
