A day with too much wind
tirsdag 8. september 2020
The forecast of the weather yesterday was not really good for today and it was a pity that they were accurate this time. The wind started in the night and reached 14 m/s up till about 18 m/s. We opened a few nets (about 12) at places in the garden where there was a little bit less wind. But as expected only a few birds were caught. New birds ringed: one Sparrowhawk (Spurvehøg), one House Martin (bysvale) one Wren (Gærdesmutte) and two Willow Warblers (Løvsanger) and in addition two recaptures: one Robin (Rødhals) and one Lesser Whitethroat (Gærdesanger).
The House Martin was not caught in the garden but did fly against a window at the most southern part of Denmark. It was a bit dizzy and it was brought to us for assessing whether it was healthy enough to get a ring. It was not damaged by the hit and after some sugar water it was behaving as a House Martin should do and when we released it, it was happily flying away again.
To show how the weather was two pictures of the waves near the house and one of our little house hare (sheltering for the wind by sitting against the wall of the station). It is a very cozy animal. We can come quite close and it is not really scared of us.
Let’s hope tomorrow is better for bird catching and that we have a bit more to tell.
Till tomorrow
Robert
